Fairs and Festivals of Rajasthan

Rajasthan is hands down one of the hottest states in India, with a very dry and hot climate throughout the year, but that doesn’t stop its people from hosting numerous vibrant and lively festivals each year. I am one of those tourists that were a part of these grand fiestas, and today I will share with you my experiences at the fairs and festivals of Rajasthan.

Desert Festival: I find myself lucky to have experienced the vibrant deserts and castles of Jaisalmer during this festival. The 3-day festivals had me busy with camel races, polo matches, turban tying competitions, and a lot more. However, I couldn’t forget the mesmerizing dance performance at the end of the day.

The Bikaner Camel Festival: The Bikaner Camel Festival, just like the Pushkar Camel Fair, is a showcase of creativity and camels. Events like camel decoration, hair cutting, milking, and dancing are a feast for the eyes. Plus, the grand fireworks on the last day are like the cherry on top.

Nagaur Fair: In simple words, I can say that this fair in Nagaur is the second-largest cattle event in India. I am not exaggerating, as I have witnessed it with my own eyes. The carnival offers the biggest stage for trading cattle, bullocks, oxen, camels, horses, and whatnot. I enjoyed seeing people with long mustaches and wearing vibrant dresses. It was a brilliant cultural festival that I can’t wait to see again.

Pushkar Fair : It is the largest camel trade that attracts 50,000 to 20,000 camels. It is the largest platform to buy and sell camels, cattle, and horses, and it is held in the Hindu month of Kartik, and I am glad I was a part of it last year when I was on a Rajasthan Tour.

The Elephant Festival: The Pink City of Rajasthan doesn’t lack behind when it comes to animal-based festivals. The Elephant Festival, held every year during Holi, witnesses a symbol of Rajasthan’s royalty – a parade of dressed, painted, groomed, and ornamented elephants. These elephants also participate in the race, tug of war, and polo, which draw in huge crowds, of which I was a part, enjoying this amazing event.

I witnessed this grand celebration in the decorated city, which has significant importance in Rajasthan’s culture.

Gangaur Festival: This 18-day festival after Holi is a vibrant event, that people of Rajasthan, especially women celebrate, I asked someone and found out its beautiful significance about how married women worship Gauri Mata and unmarried women pray to her to get good husbands. But the image of the females dressing up as Isar and Gangaur to carry through the city is still fresh and beautiful in my memories. The festival is truly epic.

Ashwa Poojan: Back in Udaipur, I give you Ashwa Poojan on the 9th day of Navratari, a unique Rajasthani festival to worship horses. The significance is to acknowledge the relationship between honor and the horse. I am glad I witnessed the religious ceremony that the house’s eldest member performed during my Homestay last year. It was soothing. To wrap it up, we enjoyed authentic Rajasthani cuisine.
