About Mysore
Mysore was once the capital of the ancient royal Mysore province. The word Mysore has been derived from the word mahisasurana ooru, this word means town nahishasura. Mysore is a very beautiful place with magnificent palaces, mesmerizing gardens, sacred temples, shady avenues and impressive buildings. This city is very glorious as well as charming. The one visiting Mysore has not left untouched by its beauty and charm.
Places to visit in Mysore
There are many places of attractions in Mysore and a few are mentioned below.
You just can not return back without visiting the Mysore palace. It is one of the most ancient palaces of India and has been built over a thousand years ago. Many people do not believe but this palace has both Hindu and Muslim influences. After a fire in 1897, this palace was rebuilt as it is been seen by krishnaraja wodeyar IV under the direction of great architect Henry Irwin.
The next major tourist attraction is the st. Philomena church and it is one of the oldest churches amongst all in Mysore. This church is built in gothic style and is considered to be one of the largest churches in India. Lofty towers and stained glass windows give this church an outstanding look.
Shri. Jayachamarajendra art gallery is one of the oldest art galleries in India. It was established in the year 1875 and has a very rare collection of paintings from the same era itself. This art gallery is located in the jagmohan palace and holds paintings made by raja ravi varma as well as traditional paintings from mysore.
The Mysore zoo was initially set up by the royal families and houses. Some of the uncommon species of birds and animals are found here. The Mysore zoo has acquired fame for breeding some of the most uncommon species.
